Seaweed

Both the United Nations, the Government and Regional Authorities have decided that Norway will use the ocean – from the bottom to the surface – in a more comprehensive way than up to now.

Cultivation of seaweed and kelp – brown macroalgae – is predicted to play an important role in the upcoming bio economics. To industrialize aquaculture of macroalgae is today an international starting race to establish production and markets. Norway should have all the prerequisites for success in that respect.

What can seaweed be used for?

Many of the species can be used directly as food or processed to several other products. The future algae industry can thus contribute raw materials to a variety of applications:

  • Pharmacy
  • Cosmetics
  • Chemistry
  • Food
  • Food ingredients
  • Fertilizing
  • Feed
  • Biofuel

What benefits are cultivation of macroalgae?

Environmentally-friendly and future-oriented. Biomass from cultivated macroalgae is more sustainable than most of today’s alternatives because marine algae:

  • Does not require fertilization or freshwater supply during the growth phase
  • Do not load food ground
  • Do not cause deforestation
  • Binds up a lot of CO2 during the growth period
  • Improves the habitat for fish fry
  • Has very small environmental footprints
